Although gender equality is a core value of the European Union, gender-based violence is still an ongoing issue. As can be seen in the outcome of this survey, contrasting opinions on the matter are found in the Belgian population. In 2016, about 15 percent of Belgian respondents believed that violence against women is often provoked by the victim.
During the surveyed period, whilst one out of two respondents totally disagreed with such a statement, a third of respondents did not disagree completely with it. Gender-based violence refers to physical, sexual, and psychological violence that affects persons of a particular gender.
